When someone near you searches “salon near me” or “best biryani nearby,” Google shows a little map with a handful of businesses on it. If you're not one of them, you're invisible to that customer — no matter how good you are. The fix is free: add your business to Google Maps.
It takes about fifteen minutes. Here's exactly how, and the one step most people skip that keeps them off the map.
What you're really creating: a Google Business Profile
Your spot on Google Maps is powered by a free listing called a Google Business Profile. It's the panel that shows your name, hours, photos, reviews and directions when someone finds you on Maps or in Search. Add and verify it, and you appear on the map. Leave it half-empty, and you lose to the shop next door that filled theirs in.
How to add your business to Google Maps, step by step
- Start the listing
Go to
business.google.com(or search your business name in Google Maps and tap Add your business). Sign in with the Google account you want to own the listing — use one that belongs to the business, not a staff member's personal account. - Enter your business name and category
Type your exact business name and pick the category that fits best (e.g. “Beauty salon,” “Bakery,” “Dental clinic”). The category strongly shapes which searches you show up for, so choose the closest real one.
- Add your location or service area
If customers come to you, add your address so a pin drops on the map. If you visit them (a photographer, a home service), choose a service area instead and you can hide the address. Add your phone number and website too.
- Verify your business
Google needs to confirm you're real before you fully appear — usually by phone, email, video, or a postcard with a code. This is the step people skip. Until you verify, your listing won't show properly. Pick the fastest method Google offers you.
- Complete the profile
Add your hours, real photos, your services, and a short description that mentions your area. A complete profile ranks better and gets more calls and visits than a bare one.
Fill it out properly — a half-empty listing loses
Getting on the map is the start. Getting chosen comes from a complete, believable listing:
- Accurate hours — including special hours for festivals and holidays.
- Real photos of your place, your work and your team — not stock images.
- The right categories and services so you match what people search.
- A description that says what you do and names your area.
- Your correct name, address and phone — matching your signboard and website exactly.
Then keep it alive
Google favours listings that look active. Post updates and offers, add fresh photos, keep your hours right, and — most of all — reply to your reviews. A listing that's tended to climbs; one that's set-and-forgotten slips.
On Google Maps, the complete, active listing wins — not the oldest business or the biggest.
How long until I show up on Google Maps?
Once you're verified, your listing can appear within a few days. Ranking near the top of the map — the goal — takes longer: it comes from a complete profile, a steady flow of reviews, and regular activity over weeks and months. The businesses at the top aren't lucky; their listings are simply the most complete and best-tended in the area.
